Backup Mail Service

Operate your own email server? Consider 's backup mail service. When a mail server goes down and someone tries to send you an email, the message will be bounced back to the user. You won't lose any valuable emails with our mail backup services that can be setup regardless whether the domain is using our name servers or not. If the domain is not using our name servers, you will need to add our backup MX server smtp.dnsexit.com as the backup MX for your domain.

Background

When an email client tries to send emails, it lookup the domain's DNS to know what are the mail exchangers (MX) for the domain. Each MX record is given a preference number and the lowest becomes the primary mail server. Mail delivery is first attempted on the lowest preference number MX. If the delivery fails, it tries the second lowest preference MX and so on. If no mail servers can be reached then the mail will be bounced back to the sender.

Backup MX

's mail backup service acts as your second priority mail server. If your mail server cannot be reached, the mail will be routed to our mail backup server and wait in queues. Our server will keep checking your mail server every 30 minutes. Once your mail server is detected available, our mail server will forward the emails to your mail server. Our mail server will keep attempting to deliver mail to your server for 5 days. Mails queued in our mail server exceeding 5 days will be returned to the sender. You have option to turn on Spamassassin Spam checking on your emails. Emails found to be Spam will be drop out before reaching your email server. Web interface was provided to check queued emails and even read your emails even when your mail server is down.You also have option to set the mail back to monitoring mode that we will monitor you mail server every 10 minutes and will only accept emails for your domain only when your server is down.

How to signup

If you are already login into the member account:
*A - domain using other name servers instead of our name servers:*
	At the main menu of your account, there is a link "Add Services" and choose "Mail Backup MX service" to setup the service. Since the domain is not using our name servers, you must add our mail server smtp.dnsexit.com as the backup MX for your domain at the DNS serving your domain.
*B - domain uses DNSEXIT name servers:*
	You must first setup DNS for the domain and specify the primary MX at "MX Settings" of the domain DNS. Then, click on the "Mail Backup Service" link at "MX Settings" to add Mail Backup MX Service for the domain.
